Just Exactly What Did the Big CIO’s Do Last Year?

It Was A Tough Year
To say that last year was a rough year, might be the understatement of the decade. Every business seemed to be taking it on the nose and anytime you opened the paper or turned on the TV, it just seemed as though the bad news kept on coming. What’s interesting for all of you who dream of someday becoming a CIO, is that the best CIOs didn’t allow all of the bad news to discourage them – they still made progress.

Yes, I believe that we all know what the right thing to do is. However, sticking to our guns when it seems like the rest of the world is falling apart all around us is what separates the good CIOs from the not-so-good ones. What does it take to keep moving forward? Most of the best CIOs all agree that even in bad times an IT department should be an externally directed force that is focused on growth, customers, and creating market-facing leadership.

The Best CIOs Still Made Progress
Amazingly enough, a global recession can be good for business. It shakes out the weaker companies and primes customers to start buying again once things pick up again. Bob Evans has been talking with some of the CIOs for the biggest global firms and he’s found out that they’ve been quite busy, despite the global recession. Here are some examples:

  • Liu Zhixuan, CIO of China’s Shenzhen Airlines: Liu has been working on what he calls a “service-chain integration” project for the airline. Once it’s in place, this IT solution will offer an end-to-end view of not just the airline’s business processes but it will also allow customers to be segmented. As an additional value to the airline, this project will automatically reset the outcomes of some of business processes based on a customer’s status.
  • Kim Tac Keuk, CIO of LG Electronics:: Since my current cell phone is made by LG, I’m always interested in what they are up to. During the past year Kim has lead their efforts to implement a global single-instance Oracle ERP system. Anyone who has been involved in one of these projects knows what a bear they can be even when they aren’t global in nature. This project started off by requiring an 18-month effort to map, integrate, and optimize 440 business processes across LG’s 83 subsidiaries. What I liked best about this accomplishment is that it gave the IT department intimate knowledge about how the company does business. Kim believes that it is important also because he says that in his company IT teams must be masters of all processes across the enterprise.
  • Tania Nossa head of IT for Alcoa Brazil:: Making Aluminum requires a lot of raw material and energy. Trying to create a successful company to do this is difficult enough even when you aren’t in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. Tania spent last year working to extend and upgrading the company’s connectivity. This might not seem like such a big deal, until you consider that it means running LAN cables down into mines in the Amazon rainforest – then you start to appreciate what he’s been able to accomplish.
  • Alan Matula, CIO of Royal Dutch Shell:: One of the things that many want-to-be CIOs forget is that very little of what a CIO does has anything to do with technology. For example, Alan spent part of his time last year signing over $4B in outsourcing contracts. Clearly he’s going to have a big job in the upcoming year managing and keeping track of each of those contacts. Oh, and during the same year he implemented one of the world’s largest unified communications solutions. That makes for a full year!

What All Of This Means For You
It’s all too easy to get distracted by what we read in the newspaper and see on TV. This past year was an excellent example of how bad news can flood our minds and distract us from what we really should be doing.

As Bob’s research has shown, the best CIOs didn’t allow a global recession to stop them from moving forward. Sure it may have impacted their budgets and slowed their projects down, but they still made progress.

Learning by example is how one can become a great CIO. Let what these CIOs accomplished this year serve as an example for you on how to keep your eye on the prize as you work towards become a great CIO.

VoIP Providers – Look-Out For the Best

The latest internet telephony services are delivering end-to-end media-rich collaborative applications for voice, video, data and images over the internet. These services offer unified communication and they are gaining popularity among various business houses of different sizes. The merit of IP services is that it provides a competitive edge with efficient internal operations that increases productivity of calls and significantly lowers down the long distance and international call charges for users.

The advanced VoIP services enable the users to connect with others anytime and any where across the globe. As a matter of fact, internet telephony services are based on the packet switching technique, wherein calls are routed over internet. This allows users to experience telecommunication much the same way e-mail travels over the Internet.

The VoIP services allow users to cut-down their monthly telecommunication costs and add a wide array of features to their calling plans such as call forwarding, call waiting, voice mailing and many more. As a matter of fact, this unified communication has a potential to simplify and improve the business communication quite significantly. Moreover, the Voice over IP service also augments business agility quite significantly.

The users can avail VoIP services using their fixed line as well as mobile phones. Considering this fact, VoIP technology is gaining popularity over the pre-existing PSTN services. With increasing popularity and benefits attached to it, these services have opened brand new opportunities for users to venture into VoIP telephony services. This, in turn, has resulted in a new platform for people to enter and reap more profits.

With a boom in the VoIP market, demand for IP call termination services is on the peak. The VoIP providers are offering a whole range of value-added services to cater to the evolving needs and requirements of business users, small and medium sized businesses as well as residential users.

The providers offer different services such as wholesale carrier service, reseller programs, managed partitioning services and business solutions to their respective clients or users that could be either wholesalers, resellers or end-users. Furthermore, wholesalers and resellers sell some portion of VoIP switch or call termination services to end-users or real-users.

While availing the VoIP services, one should concentrate on selecting the one of the best VoIP phone service providers. The users must keep a check on two prime considerations i.e. quality of service provided and cost efficiency. Some of the QoS parameters include availability of customer support, flexibility, compatibility, reliability and scalability.

1. Availability of technical support: To assist the real-users with technical and infrastructural support, wholesalers or resellers must look-in for a VoIP phone service provider that offers technical support round the clock.

2. Flexibility: The users must select the provider that offers VoIP solutions in the most flexible manner. For instance, this feature allows users to add or extend the telephone lines without compromising on other valuable options such as call forwarding, 3-way calling and call waiting.

3. Reliability: As a matter of fact, VoIP market is flooded with providers that offer user-friendly interfaces, so users or wholesalers must concentrate on this factor also.

Last but not the least; cost efficiency plays a vital role in the entire selection process. As a matter of fact, the VoIP market is flooded with providers, so extensive research should be carried out for zeroing in on any one. Therefore, while selecting the VoIP provider, users must opt for the provider that offers lowest call tariffs accompanied with maximum features.

To conclude it can be said that the VoIP solutions are getting popular among business houses of any size. And VoIP providers are serving them well by offering different services – albeit – via wholesalers and resellers.

Toll Free Number Phone Service

A Toll Free Number Phone Service is extremely essential as it can result in increased sales of the company. The moment a company advertises its toll free number, it almost immediately brings in an increase of at least 30%. There have also been a variety of statistics that have shown that the return sales of the sold product can be efficiently reduced by nearly half because of such numbers. There are many reasons as to why a company should choose any such toll free number phone service.

The main reason why a company should choose such a toll free number is because it gives the client the impression that he is dealing with a reliable and professional company that knows exactly what to do. At the same time, such a professional phone number also signifies that when the client calls, he will be treated to the right service that will provide him all the answers he requires.

There are a variety of options that a company can add to make the service more professional. Various voice messages, fax and voice features as well as holding and call forwarding options can be implemented.
By implementing a toll free number phone service, a company can handle various incoming calls without the need of hiring any receptionist.

It also does not matter whether the company is using a single line or even multiple lines, by making use of a virtual PBX, the company is able to direct and route all calls to the right person. All that the customer has to do is to simply follow the voice options over the telephone.

There is also an option that allows a business to forward any of its incoming calls to a specific cell number. All options are customizable by the company and as such any new features can be added as and when required.

Having a toll free number will help create the impression that your business has reached a certain locality even if you don’t have any offices there. This helps build the confidence of the customers when they know your operations are just nearby and in the process boost your sales. Find out more at eTollFreeNumber.com

Article Submission Secrets – A Great Formula for Prospect & Profit Pulling Titles for Your Articles

Powerful article marketing requires that you write a great title for your articles.

So here is just one of my formulas for a great title – Keywords – Benefits – Keywords. Use your keywords in the beginning of your title, make sure you make the benefit(s) clear, and then use your keywords again.

So let’s unpack this formula so you can use it.

My Article Title Formula – Keywords – Benefit(s) – Keywords

Keywords - Most article titles online fail from the start because they do not include keywords in the first four words of the title.

“The Top Seven Benefits of Writing Online Articles” sounds like a great title, but on the internet it is not. The search engines read the first four words

“The Top Seven Benefits” and see no keywords and decide the article is not about article writing and do not deliver it to the online searcher.

So we would change the title to “Article Writing – The Top Seven Benefits of Writing Articles Online.”

Benefits - Benefits are a must have in your article title. It’s so easy to include benefits that it’s a shame so many writers don’t do it. In the article title we are using for an example here, I let the reader know there are seven benefits inside the article. Simple as that.

Keywords - It’s also fairly easy to use your keywords again in your article title. This is one of the ways in which writing online articles is different from writing any other kind of article. Online, the longer the title the better. Longer titles give the search engines more words to find and allows you to use your keywords again in your article title.

And now I would like to offer you free access to two of my Article Writing Templates. You can download them by going to http://www.GreatArticleMarketingBlog.com, and get a fr’ee CD while you are there.

Toll Free Number Can Increase Profit For a Company

A toll free number can increase the sales of your business. If a company advertises his toll free number in the sales ad it can bring in 30% more orders. Additionally, statistics show that product return rates can be decreased by as much as half if it is place directly on the product. When you print your number in marketing materials you have to remember certain things in mind for effective marketing. Some of the tactics are as follows:

Always create a vanity number, an alphanumeric number so that people can remember your business and contact information. Before sending your printing material like business cards, pamphlets, brochures for printing see to it that you have bolded both text “toll free” and it. Make sure you put your toll free number in the ad and use the phrase “Contact us toll free at…” People can be reassured by the fact that the phone call to your business will cost them nothing. See to it that your customer can contact you easily, so it would be better if you display your number on your website in several places and also include your email address. Use several different number in your marketing so that you can easily track your efforts, find the most effective advertising, and then capitalize on which method works best for your profits. Call log sheets can be reviewed in real time and you will get a better picture of what is working and what is not. If you have a product for sale, add a toll free fax line to compliment your ordering system. You can increase profits of your business by marketing your number in an effective way. The most important thing to remember is to use new methods of marketing to attract the attention of potential customers.

If a company gets a number with virtual PBX service it can solve two nationwide business problems. It will help customers to reach out to you regularly. A toll free number can lead to national advertisement which will generate more profit than a local number ever would, even in local advertisements. The second solution provides is the convenience of a 24/7 operation capability. If you are asleep, your calls can still be answered and rerouted either to your voice mail or to your home phone. You can access your voice mail messages at any time and respond to your customers the next day. It can make even the smallest businesses bloom with their customers. Promoting a toll free number is an easy way to gain attention and develop the customer base you want. A small company can remain in competition with larger companies. Providing great communication with your customers is key to staying ahead.

Leadership Matters Change – Ready Managers And The Law of Business

John F. Kennedy once said, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”

Every day, in hundreds of change situations happening in your workplace, the actions of leaders at all levels are risking the promotion of atrophy. This is simply because many managers are ill-prepared to address the changing landscape of the business. Just as change then is a law of life, so it is with business.

Issues Compounding Change

In and of itself, change is prevalent in your organization. Compounding this are the changing demographics of the workforce on top of issues such as management of strategies for new revenue growth, planned culture shifts and initiatives to contain costs.

Imagine the impact to your organization if your managers ignored these issues?

Typically, your environment begins to look like this: rumors, backbiting, lack of focus, conflict, employee anxiety, lack of energy in service to internal and external customers and a breakdown of trust between managers and employees.

Can your organization sustain a competitive advantage under this scenario? Probably not.

Building Change Managers

It is not enough today that people are promoted from the floor or enter management without understanding the impact of change. Change-ready managers are respected and effective, are able to motive others to be receptive to change and build collaborative environments.

The fact is that people don’t leave companies; they leave bad bosses who are ineffective and not respected. They can’t retain employees and they certainly can’t motivate the ones who stay. A company can espouse family-friendly benefits and have great pay and benefits, but also have managers who are poisoning the well because they simply don’t know how to manage the change.

Supporting and Motivating Change

One of the main conditions for the support of change is the degree of motivation among individuals. During the quality movement by W. Edwards Deming, a lot was discovered about how individuals either hold on to the status quo or embrace taking the road to change.

Managers who understand the distractions and emotions of their team members in association with change will be better prepared to support and lead them through it. The right training for managers gives them the tools to first understand the change, interpret it and then facilitate the acceptance of the new way vs. the old.

Change-ready managers will communicate more effectively with their employees, encourage participation and empower them to be able to accept change.

Training Managers to Become Change-Ready

As in life, the law of change for business is constant. That’s never been truer than it is today. Implementing a training program to make your managers change-ready will not only make them great bosses, but it will also build teams of greatly- empowered employees who are ready for change. Vital Learning’s Supporting Change program will empower your leaders and first-line managers to:

Understand why change happens, how people react to it and how they need to be supported through the struggle. Involve team members in change initiatives by promoting their understanding and ownership of change and its benefits. Plan for individuals or work group sessions to support the change process and reinforce personal and organizational goals. See your local training professional today to get you started building for today and tomorrow.

How to Target the Highest Paying Keywords

The internet carries hundreds of websites about top paying keywords. These sites tell you how you can increase AdSense revenue. But if you really want to know how to get the highest paying keywords to give you a significant rise in pay per clicks, there are some vital aspects to consider.

The first is optimization. A lot of amateur website designers will make websites around high paying keywords but they omit to optimize the site on a specific keyword. They obviously know nothing about creating title tags, keyword density, page description, or how to create a spider friendly code.

It is important to remember that Google’s AdSense program, Kanoodle and Yahoo must be able to detect a source code before deciding on which adverts will appear. For example, if your top two keywords are ‘medical’ and ‘downloads’, you’ll end up getting adverts about ‘medical downloads’, with very little pay.

If your keyword density score is too high, the search engines, especially Google, will not be impressed. Therefore don’t ever spam keywords. Rather optimize your page correctly.

Your content is also vital if you want to see an increase in pay per clicks. If you want to entice high paying adverts, you have got to interest visitors in what your advertiser requires.

Your content should answer questions like: What are the benefits of medical insurance? Why should the visitor think about medical insurance? Where can I get the cheapest medical insurance? You have got to get your visitors interested. Once you have got their attention, they will be far more likely to look at your adverts if they are getting information.

The content should also flow easily. Don’t jam keywords into the content. A visitor will become suspicious that you are trying to hoodwink him or her. If this happens, you can be sure they will never come back. All you have succeeded in doing is wasting their time. You will produce higher paying adverts with clear flowing content.

You should also make a keyword list. If you can’t make one yourself, then buy one because it is essential. Make up a list of all relevant keywords that can be used on your website. Then, by a process of elimination, decide on the ones that are likely to be the highest paying keywords. As mentioned earlier, if you cannot do this properly yourself, it will be worth every cent if you buy a properly researched keyword list.

When you are happy that your keywords can be profitable, you can go ahead and build your website. Incorporate good content around your highest paying keywords, and then index your site on the search engines. Again it must be emphasized ‘ you have got to grab your visitor’s attention. And you’ve only got a couple of seconds to do it!

If you bear all of the above in mind, there is no reason why you should not lure visitors to your website. Your pages will contain highest paying keywords; therefore the adverts will have a high cost per click. When customers arrive at your site, the result will be more income for you.

David teaches simply “if you want traffic the place to start is targeting keywords.” Keyword Analysis Tools make all the difference. That being said, David will show you which one of the most popular keyword research tools reveals the Highest Paying Keywords. His methods have consistently shown to save time and make money online.

The Snow And How to Be a Great Person

If you live in northeast USA your arms are probably as sore as mine, and will be for another few years or so. Hours of shoveling more snow than you’ve ever seen before will do that. You’re probably taking half-hour long, extremely hot showers, and you’re also probably sipping hot chocolate and eating hot soup by the gallon.

And while you’re avoiding the roads and staying indoors indefinitely you’ve been contemplating a thing or two. I know I have. Not being able to leave your home will so often lead to introspection…

Snow is a really fascinating thing.

You can’t really get rid of it. Your only choice is to simply move it from one place to another place.

Which leads to a constant personal debate as you attack the snow in front of your home. Where do you want none, and where do you not mind having twice as much as there was a moment ago?

And that’s just your home!

The whole matter becomes terribly complicated when you remember that your clean walkway can easily become another person’s impossible to clean walkway.

I saw it all throughout the snowstorms.

People who cleaned out their car while simultaneously burying someone else’s just a little deeper. People who received much joy and pleasure walking on the snow covered grass, while knocking a whole bunch on to someone else’s freshly cleaned path. Plows that were theoretically cleaning the streets while simultaneously and indiscriminately burying peoples cars under heaps of snow.

Why? Because they are the center of the universe. Their personal convenience and enjoyment comes first. Or they have a job to do, and being a nuisance to other people when you have job to do is, well, it’s what you do. Other people’s things are other people’s problems.

Luckily enough for me, I only saw a little of that.

You know what I saw a lot of?

People helping elderly folk shovel the front of their homes.

People who stopped what they were doing at their own homes to help other people who couldn’t do it on their own.

People who noticed others who were away for the weekend and would be returning to driveways they couldn’t even park in. So they cleaned it up for them.

People helping others push cars over slippery snow piles.

What a fine opportunity the snow presents to help us all figure out which of these types of people we are going to be!

How to Use Keywords to Rank on Page One of a Search Engine

Anytime that you want your content or ad to rank on page one of a search engine you have to use keywords. What is a keyword? A Keyword is a term used as a “keyword” to retrieve documents in an information system such as a catalog or Search Engine.

Search engines want to give their searchers good content based on their query or what they typed in the “search box”. If you provide good content or ads, your information has the possibility of ranking on page one of a search engine. It doesn’t matter if you are using Search Engine Optimization “natural” ranking or Pay per Click, keywords are the some of the building blocks you need to rank on page one of a search engine.

So how do you use keywords to rank on page one of a search engine? There is no right way that is the only way, it’s really who you ask and since this is really a science that is still being dissected by many of us, we do many trials. Since you are reading this article you may be asking yourself how I ranked on page one of Google. After some research and trails I thought to myself how can I use keywords to rank on page one of a search engine?

First you need to know that there are two different types of keywords; short and long. For example of a short keyword would be “Hawaii property” which is very vague as you can see; but a long keyword would be something like “I am looking for Hawaii beachfront property for sale “. When you use the long keywords you have the ability to cut your competitors dramatically, which results in higher ranking in the search engines.

Here are a few ideas to help you with your keyword search:

Start by logging into Google and type in your keyword search that you want to make content about, put quotes around this keyword so you can see the specifics on this keyword. Check on the right hand side that shows “results”, this will show you how many possibilities there are for this title or keyword, you really want to be less than 30,000 or so, again less competition.

Another idea is to use programs like Wordtracker or the Google Keyword research tool to see how many people have searched for that keyword. Keywords that people are searching that are in the ranking of 10-20 per day are great indications you can generate some traffic by using them, if there are less than 30,000 entries. If you click on the top 5 or 6 entries you can read the content and this allows you see firsthand how to use keywords to rank on page one of a search engine.

You can also investigate how people are advertising by using Pay Per Click – while you should not be rude and start going click happy ( as this is costing someone money), a couple will not make anyone lose any sleep. Read their ads, search out their keywords, how are they using them in sentences, also count how many times you read them once you have identified the keywords.

While I like to be informative and provide quality content, there may be those who would like to see what keywords I used to rank on page one of a search engine. I would ask that you either directly contact me for the content site or if you have some questions on how to use some keywords I would love to hear from you.

Frequency & Monetary Analysis For Subscription Based Services

Frequency (F) and Monetary (M) analysis, form together with Recency (R) the framework of RFM analysis. Though recency is the strongest predictor of future behavior, frequency and monetary analysis act in a complementary mode (to recency), to create a complete picture of the Customer behavior. There are many cases in which Recency analysis not coupled by Frequency & Monetary analysis, can give a misleading picture. For example, a new subscriber is very recent, but appears to have a low monetary value because she started using the service recently. The Business cannot tell, whether this new Customer will be profitable (will use the service a lot). On the other hand, an old Customer can be ranked low in R but high in F and/or M. This is probably a valuable Customer who is late in interacting with the Business. This is probably one of the candidate cases for a retention plan. In general F is a stronger predictor to M. If the service usage is producing a relatively stable monetary value, then M does not yield substantial additional insight to F. However there are exceptions. Should a Business try to offer an expensive service, the M predictor has an increased power. Those that spend a lot on a service are more likely to spend on an expensive additional service, than those who spend less. Subscription based services involve the continuous usage by a Customer, often based on a contract.

Common examples are: bank accounts, credit cards, fixed & mobile telecommunication services, internet access service. In the case of subscription based services, the frequency of use can be easily derived, since each service usage is recorded. In the case of bank accounts or credit cards, each account or card transaction is recorded. These transactions are handled by banking systems in order to produce monthly balances or Customer invoices. In the case of fixed & mobile telecommunication services, each phone call is captured in a CDR record (call detail record) along with details about the call (calling & called number, time of day, duration, cost band). These usage records are processed by the billing systems, in order to produce Customer invoices. Therefore the banking and telecoms industries, capture rich information on service usage in order to bill Customers. Thus the information for the execution of an F and/or M analysis, is there. These service usage transactions are executed by millions of Customers very frequently and may be producing a huge number of service usage records on a monthly basis. Therefore, in order to execute F and M in these industries, substantial computational & storage capacity is often needed.

Specifically, usage information should be extracted from the operational systems into a datawarehouse, which shall store the historical information on usage and periodically produce F and M scores for the Customer base and sort the Customers in F and M quintiles. Moreover, it can perform time-series analysis on FM scores. Finally, in order to produce an F or M score for any Banking or Telecom Customer, the Business has to aggregate Customer behaviour from all accounts this Customer holds. Prerequisite for this, is to have a Customer-centric data structure. If the Business operates on unlinked accounts of the same real Customer, then it may be unable to carry out an accurate F or M analysis. Copyright 2006 – Kostis Panayotakis

Will VOIP & IP Telephony Eventually Replace Traditional Phones?

What is VoIP? It uses the same principles as a phone but it uses the transmission of the internet. Most VoIP to VoIP phones are actually free – amazing no call charges and no more bills.

So if there were VoIP networks set up all over the world with everyone using them, it would have a massive effect on not only the current phone providers but maybe mobile service provider’s aswell. VoIP relies on broadband or internet connection to connect to other users but is this a bad thing? You pay your one off broadband fee every month get your VoIP setup and communicate with all other VoIP members for free no matter how long you talk.

Although the traditional phone is still being used and not likely to be replaced in the near future IP telephony is the way forward, nearly every household and business has internet access now so why not take advantage of it – If there was a mass installation of wireless networks throughout the world as there is with mobile networks you would be able to take a digital VoIP phone anywhere and get connection, yet again absolutely free unless you are ringing current household numbers or mobiles.

Most companies at the moment offer variations of packages so you can communicate with other VoIP members and different networks at a flat monthly fee.

There is now also a wide range of VoIP phones being released onto the market that does everything a house phone would do such as answer messages and caller Id. That being said there is still a lot of growth needed for VoIP phones such as connecting to emergency call numbers and being made available on a global stage with masses of wireless networks, but I feel that this will shortly be answered.

Moving forward into the next decade VoIP will be the number one way to communicate and if the current service providers do not jump on the bandwagon fairly shortly there will be a lot of redundancies! As the speed that IP telephony is growing you got to get in or lose out.

So the answer to my question will VoIP replace the traditional phone and mobile well in the short term no, but now lets look at the next 5 years cheaper calls, free calls and the ability to communicate from almost anywhere globally then the only way forward will be VoIP communication. So let’s see how it plans out.

Identifying The Barrier To More Widespread VOIP Service Usage

Services available on the Internet or services that have been enabled through the widespread availability of high-speed Internet in homes and businesses are continuing to be incredibly successful, and there is every indication that this trend will continue. The popularity of worldwide VOIP services has increased to almost $16 billion in 2006, after doing an amazing and unprecedented doubling act in 2005.

But one of the things that is even more amazing is that several studies have concluded that VOIP services, based on its current trend, popularity, and financial price points, is well set to triple by the year 2010. Hosted VOIP services are managing to outnumber and outpace the IP PBX market, and the biggest thing fueling this is the implementation of VOIP in the residential market.

Residential VOIP services are well established and pretty much bug free, providing a very stable platform to replace the traditional telephone. It was well over a year ago that the number of new VOIP activations passed the number of new traditional phone activations for the first time in history.

Business VOIP services are gaining significant ground also. While some say that business VOIP is still a year or more away from being ready for “business prime time”, that fact really depends on what a business requires from their VOIP services. To be sure, business VOIP has gained significantly in recent years, where it was only a few years ago that the best business VOIP phones sounded as if you were calling from the bottom of a bathtub.

The biggest thing holding back more widespread acceptance of VOIP is the availability of reliable high-speed Internet access and bandwidth. For the residential customer, they often have very low-end DSL service, which often is not much faster than dialup and equally as unreliable. Even if they do not have a “low end” plan for their DSL or cable Internet service, the service is not reliable enough for use with VOIP, and that is not the VOIP provider’s fault.

Consumers need to understand that the reason they are paying $30-$50 per month for Internet access is because their Internet service provider has oversubscribed their connection. Some consumers may get the service they think they are getting, but when you see the ads that say “3 mb speed”, most consumers don’t realize that 3 mb is not guaranteed, nor in most cases, will they ever see it, since it is a theoretical maximum only. Consumers also do not realize that the advertised speed is their “download” speed only, and that their upload speed is significantly less, perhaps only as much as twice the speed of a dialup connection. With one computer using the connection, they may not see it, but if they are using one computer AND VOIP services, they could be asking more of their Internet connection than it is capable of providing.

Businesses face the same problem. Even if a business has “business class DSL” or “business class cable”, that still does not give them dedicated or guaranteed bandwidth in most cases. Sure, the business class service is significantly cheaper than getting a T1 line, but sharp business owners are quickly finding out that you get what you pay for. If you want dedicated and reliable, then you get a T1 line, but if you want “cheap” and “maybe it will work most days” service, you get service like DSL or cable that is really designed for the residential market, even with the name “business class”, which is a marketing gimmick more than anything else.

Even a small business with 6-8 phone lines, which also means 6-8 computers online at the same time, cannot make a long term plan for success with business class DSL or cable, especially if they want to migrate those phone lines to VOIP service. It is only a matter of time before the realities of that shared and non-dedicated Internet connection catches up with them.

Sure, a T1 line costs more, but a T1 line provides dedicated bandwidth availability and a 99.99% uptime guarantee, 24×7. The cost of a T1 is prohibitive for residential use, but for a business, even a small business, that depends on the Internet for their business operations, and which could save even more money with VOIP, the real question becomes one of whether or not a business can afford NOT to get a T1 line, or are they willing to let their competition (who DID implement a T1 line) pass them by and leave them in the dust.
