What Makes a Good VOIP Provider?

The main principle of the Voice over IP communication is that VoIP to VoIP phone calls are totally free while VoIP calls towards a PSTN (i.e landline) have a cost.

You can imagine the cost benefits for large scale enterprise giving 100’s of phone calls abroad or national to other subsidiaries companies, or even partners. Regarding far away companies, a smooth adaptation and excellent case study is the deployment of a Business VoIP service by the FSB (Federation of Small Businesses, in UK). That is a clear cost saving for FSB members leveraging their potential to the level of Medium size companies.

To me, there are only two ways to realize up to 38% cost-cuttings with a business VoIP phone system:

- Free phone calls over the same network, which can be the same building, other premises abroad, or even partners on the same network. To my point of view, that is the only element why a majority of Internet telephony providers advertise this technology as ‘free’.
- Substantial costs savings to outgoing calls towards other networks. Indeed, a majority of good providers nowadays propose yet cheaper rates than BT on many destinations in the world. But in no case 40% to 50% savings on outgoing calls.

The thing about choosing a quality VoIP provider these days rely on the provider size and on their ability to offer a ‘Pay as you grow’ service. I assume you thing the bigger is the better? Well, this is precisely the opposite, not that a major VoIP provider isn’t providing a good service but its network is more prone to be saturated and obviously giving poor quality phone calls to its customers. It is very similar to the multiplicity of internet connection providers available 2-3 years ago and stretching out to the horizon: If you chose a small to medium size one, you had great chance to get an excellent bandwidth but in the other hand this one may bankrupt after one year (it happen to me). And if you chose a big and well established internet connection provider, chances are you got slightly slower bandwidth (in these early days), but with a reliable and constant service.
