What Are VOIP Phones?

VOIP phones are voice over IP. This means that the phones have an IP address rather than run on an analog line. There are many things about these types of phones which make them an excellent choice.

Voice over IP means that each phone will have an IP address. The phones are digital and not analog. This means there is more clarity and the phones are packed with features. If you have a network of phones that you would like to install in a business, VOIP is easier because you can easily set up the network of phones by plugging Ethernet into hubs as you would the computer systems, rather than using the old school punch down blocks to configure each line.

VOIP phones can be completely managed over a computer. Once the Ethernet cable is ran and plugged in, you don’t need to do anything but from a computer. You can manage and change the name on the display when employees come and go. You can change an extension by the touch of the keyboard and you can even activate or deactivate a phone.

VOIP phones have many features that you can give to people and control entirely over the computer. You might want to give people access to check other voicemail systems on the network, forward phone lines to other phones, and do much more.

The great thing about VOIP phones is that they are cheaper than running tons of analog lines. When you setup VOIP systems you pay for a range of IP addresses. You own the addresses and you can do with them as you please. You can have phones on the IP addresses or you can have computers on them. Keep in mind they will have to be configured for a phone or for data.

One thing to keep in mind is that a computer system or server controls a VOIP system. You can backup data, such as voicemails and other things with the server so data is not lost. However, if the server ever goes down then the entire phone system will go down with it because the phone system relies on the server to be up and running at all times. It is never a good idea to have other applications or things on the phone system computer because of this. In most cases, when the phone systems go down all you have to do is reboot the computer and they are fixed. When analog phone systems go down it can take hours of troubleshooting to figure out what the problem is.

VOIP phone systems are the newest types of phone systems that people are using in businesses today. It is not common to find them in homes because they are best used for networks that need many different phone lines and they want to minimize cost and centralize how the phones are managed. These are digital phone systems and not analog. People enjoy VOIP phones much more than analog phones because of the abundance of features included.
