7 Biggest Mistakes People Make When Doing Keyword Research – Mistake Number Four

Mistake Number Four: “Failing to generate enough keywords.”

My personal philosophy when it comes to keyword research is to
act like that old-time salesman who says:

“If you throw enough pasta against the refrigerator door, some of
it’s going to stick”.

This mantra, if you will, translates to (in keyword speak):

“If you come up with enough keywords and test them all, some of
them are going to be winners”.

That is why I initially strive to come up with as many keywords
as possible. Then I can go back and edit my list if necessary and
proceed to testing my new-found keywords in the market.

To maximize the number of keywords in my initial list I rely on 8
tools to do my keyword research. I take the results from 7 of
these tools and paste them into Your KeyWord Assistant to
eliminate duplicates, rearrange word order if necessary, group into
tightly focused groups if I’m doing PPC keyword research and the add
Phrase Match and Exact Match to the mix.

The 7 other tools I use are as follows:

7) Misspelled Keywords

If you do an analysis on the results you obtain from each of these different tools, you’ll see that their results overlap – they will generate many of the same terms. But each one will generate some unique terms and that’s where Your Keyword Assistant comes into play; this application makes it easy to eliminate duplicates in your keyword list.

By combining the results I obtain from these 6 different tools (and eliminating duplicates) into one massive list, I can feel confident that I’m generating just about all of the keywords possible that are related to my original keyword.

I have listed the tools in no particular order. I use all 7 to
generate a huge list of keywords, but the order in which I use
them is pretty much independent of the results.

Overture, Good Keywords and the Keyword Finder Utility are all free tools. If your funds are low, start with these tools first. WordTracker offers a free trial of their program although the number of results you can obtain from the free trial are limited compared to the paid version.

Once you’re to a point where you want to make an investment into
a really good keyword research tool, I recommend starting with
Keywords Analyzer. This software was written to provide
information for SEO folks as well as for PPC users so it’s
extremely useful to both groups.
