Full Monty Meta Tags – No Half Measures

The use of descriptive meta tags are often required by search engines. I believe if you are going to insert meta tags in to your page code then they have to be full monty, no half measures. If you own the website and all is above board then why hide critical information that the search engine can utilize to enhance your sites performance at the search engine rankings board.

The following meta tags are critical:

• Title. The page title is the most important meta tag of all, must describe your page content and include words from within your page text.
• Description. Your description is your selling point to the search engines. Ensure it’s a full descriptive description of you page content. I would recommend that it is related to your first paragraph.
• Keywords. I recommend no more than 4 keyword or keyword phrases separated by commas and in order of importance.

Here are additional meta tags that often get looked over by webmasters as just a nice to have, I recommend that when creating your meta tags by meta generator or by manual means that you include these. The information within these tags can enhance your sites performance.

• Copyright. This indicated to the search engines that your page material has copyrights.
• Author. Lets search engines know the company name or site owners name.
• Email. can be utilized by search engine or visitors for contact purposes.
• Language. Will be used by search engines when considering regional searches.
• Character Set. Tells individual browsers which character set to use.
• Distribution. Lets search engines know if your site is for global, regional or local distribution.
• Rating. Informs search engines of your audience and content age ratings.
• Robots. Used by search to index or crawl pages or not.
• Revisit. Informs search when to come back and index your site.
• Expires. Lets search engine know when page content is know longer valid.
