Career Tip – How to Write For a Living

Learning how to write for a living can be tough, especially if you are new to the field. The demands of living expenses, social expectations and finding your way in the world of writing can be quite challenging for a beginner.

There are, however, ways you can actually write for a living and earn a little extra on the sideline:

Writing offline

One of the first things that come to mind when people think of writer is novel, book, magazine or newspaper. These are the traditional offline writing careers that bring in respectable amounts of money, but require years to penetrate. You will find yourself competing with thousands upon thousands of other writers also seeking to establish their names in the traditional way, and not that many clients are that forgiving when it comes to quality and quantity.

If you wish to write for a living via these traditional offline means, then you had best be prepared to spend a serious amount of time marketing your work. This is especially true for novelists, who will start out in the market earning only a pittance for their work – if it gets published at all. Journalists working with newspapers and magazines have the advantage though, as long as they are able to come up with content that is unique, well-written and attractive to the eye. You’ll still have to start low, like novelists, but you will eventually start earning a reputation as you become a regular and dependable contributor.

Writing online

The Internet is one of the best places to turn to when you are starting out as a writer, since websites are on the lookout for fresh new content and online marketers are looking for pieces to advertise their products. The profit can rival that of writing offline, as long as you know what and where you write, but the competition for the higher-earning writing gigs is perhaps even fiercer. This is especially true when your competition is halfway round the world and willing to work for half what you would be regularly paid.

Nonetheless, writing online for a living is a lot easier to get into than traditional publications. Do a little research on search-engine optimized or SEO articles, and you will get the gist of how most online writing works. Freelance websites also make life a whole lot easier, since you can sign up with a client or two and work along their specifications. Prepare to do a lot of research on a wide variety of topics, though, since everything from building cat houses to explaining the advantages of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking to new world order conspiracies are all fair game.

There is one last thing to remember when you learn how to write for a living – learn how write for a particular niche. The way journalists write varies from how novelists write, likewise for web content writers and affiliate marketing writers. Each method of writing has its own unique perks and quirks, which you must always be on the lookout for in order to get. The simplest way to do that is to read, and read a lot.

So yes, writers don’t just write a lot. They read a lot too, and that is what keeps them rolling with the times and keeping the money flowing in.
