New Daylight Saving Schedule Creates Problems For Time Sensitive Systems

If you have a business telephone system, voice mail, call accounting, security system or any other time sensitive systems, you must be aware of and make plans for the new Daylight Saving Time schedule.

On August 8, 2005, President George W. Bush signed the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This act changes the dates when we set our clocks forward or back beginning in 2007.

Daylight Saving Time will begin at 2:00 am the second Sunday in March and end at 2:00 am the first Sunday in November. The old axiom still applies Spring Forward and Fall Back meaning that in the spring we set our clocks forward an hour and in the fall we set our clocks back an hour.

This is a change from the schedule of the last several decades. Many computers, telecommunications, security and other systems with built in clocks are configured to automatically adjust their time: On The OLD Schedule! What this can mean is that on March 11th of 2007 you set all your clocks, telephone systems and computers ahead one hour only to find that two weeks later theyve set themselves ahead another hour.

Some examples of what this may mean to you is that if your telephone system automatically adjust the time, your main console could begin receiving calls before you are open or your auto attendant could tell your callers you are closed even though youre not.

Of course the time display on your telephone would just be a minor annoyance but if you have a security system that automatically unlocks your doors at 8 am and locks them again at 5 pm you may find you and your customers locked out of your business or worse yet all your doors may be unlocked with no one in the building.

Other examples of some time sensitive systems that you should be aware of are:

* Heating and Air Conditioning Systems

* Computer Networks with time sensitive login schedules

* Call Accounting Systems

* Voice Mail Systems

* Many, Many others.

Be sure to speak with your telephone system dealers, you security system manager and you network administrator. They should be aware of what equipment will need to be adjusted manually and what systems can be patched to adjust to the new schedule.
