You might be asking yourself what SIP stands for. It’s not taking a sip of a drink, but when you understand what SIP services can do for you then you might be sipping your drink and enjoying the benefits.
First of all, let’s be clear what SIP stands for. It is short for session initiation protocol. That might not mean much to you, but it is basically an internet engineering task force that helps initiate an interactive user session.
When you think about an interactive session it usually involves a multimedia element such as video, voice, chat, gaming and virtual reality. SIP services are the application layer of the communications model. That means that it is the level that is responsible for ensuring that communication is possible.
Not only can SIP services establish multimedia sessions or internet calls, it can modify or terminate them. With SIP services you can invite participants to individually or have a group join a session.
The other great part of is that it makes it possible for users to initiate or receive different types of communication services from any location. It also requires the users to identify themselves wherever they are.
SIP determines the end system that is to be used for a session. It also determines the type of communication that will be used such as media and the media parameters. The other thing that it does is monitor the called party’s desire to engage in the communication. Once these things are in place then SIP establishes the call parameters at either end of the communication. When it is all done or needing to be transferred then SIP services can take care of that.
