Take a Sip of Hawaii’s Intoxicating Wines

When one thinks of various wine producing regions, the warm, tropical Hawaiian Islands would not leap immediately to mind. Characteristically, majority of grape growing in the world is prepared in countries with moderate climates. But it could be observed that skiing is also a major sport in Hawaii, which means that the state could also do viticulture. These two activities are made possible in this tropical paradise due to the higher elevations of the islands’ volcanic summits and ridges.

Even though there have been no known reports of either noble red wine varieties or noble white wine varieties being effectively grown in Hawaii for commercial purposes, there are actually quite a few numbers of other grape varieties that are currently being cultivated in this state. Listed below are some of Hawaii’s grape varieties as well as their descriptions:

Symphony

In the Hawaiian tropics, the Symphony grape is a white grape that is actually a cross between the Grenache Gris as well as the Muscat of Alexandria. This variety produces wines that are particularly fruity, with a taste that ranges from off dry to sweet, and this is fantastic to drink on the islands’ beaches.

Carnelian

The Carnelian grape variety is a mix of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignane. The wines that are yielded from these grapes are medium red in their color. The wines are also light in body and they also possess a good balance. These wines could be enjoyed while they are still young but it also ages well.

Isabella

The Isabella grape variety has long been grown in the Hawaiian Islands and it is also believed by numerous people as the grape variety that is most suitable for the state. The Isabella variety is a grape hybrid originally from the United States, and because of its outstanding adaptability, the Isabella grapes have reached a lot of countries. It is even apparently utilized in South Africa as one of their rootstocks.

Hawaii is also home to two state wineries. The Tedeschi Vineyards is Maui’s sole commercial winery. This vineyard grew around 23 acres of the Carnelian grape variety at a high elevation of roughly 2,000 feet. When this grape variety began to suffer evident losses, it gave the winery the chance to sow new varietals of grapes like Pinot Gris, Chenin Blanc, Syrah, Syrah Noir, as well as two kinds of Chardonnay. The Tedeschi Vineyards of Maui actually makes almost 30,000 cases of various wines, which includes some wines that make use of pineapple grown in Maui. This vineyard also manufactures 3 sparkling wines as well as 6 still wines.

The other state vineyard is called the Volcano Winery. This is situated on the Big Island flanked by two of the state’s most active volcanoes, which are Kilauea and Mauna Loa. This winery showcases some Symphony grape wines, a few island fruit-blended wines, as well as the all-honey wines. Included in the Volcano Winery’s selection of wines are two all-grape wines as well as three wines made of fruit blends. The guava and the Brazilian grapes used in this fruit blends are produced locally.

Tourists should also try one of the fine wines made in Hawaii. These Hawaiian wines are indicative of everything that the islands are known for, which could only be described as light, breezy, fun and absolutely refreshing.
