You have heard the networking term SIP, but what is it? SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol, in which a phone company delivers telephony services over a wire called a “trunk”. This trunk connects a business’ PBX (private branch exchange) to a PSTN (public switched telephone network). The actual trunk hardware carries the phone calls from the business site to the PSTN, giving the business their phone service. The advantage of using a SIP trunk is that it replaces physical cables with telephone service over a data network. This data network can consist of a dedicated line, a shared connection with a data service or even by using the Internet for connectivity.
While SIP trunking services have been around since 2005, getting businesses to accept this form of technology have been difficult. The main reason being, most network managers don’t fully understand what a SIP trunk is or how it works. Another reason is businesses are only now understanding the need for this technology for their businesses. For companies looking to use VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology, they should also consider SIP trunks.
The following are several advantages of using SIP trunk over traditional telephony services:
- Unlimited number of voice sessions can be carried over a SIP trunk (other than bandwidth).
- SIP can deliver many of the unified communications (UC) functions such as chat services, presence, conferencing capabilities and the ability to share applications.
- No need to invest in premise-based hardware and software, instead connectivity is done within the IP telephony service provider’s network.
- Cost-effective, increasing the investment of a business’ VoIP.
- Increased user productivity.
- Convergence of multiple lines.
- Better bandwidth utilization.
- More up-time than traditional telephony.
To roll-out SIP trunk services, a business will only need three things:
- An IP PBX system with a SIP-ready trunk.
- A device that sits at the edge of the network that communicates with the SIP.
- A service provider that offers a SIP-trunking service.
While SIP trunk services are similar to PSTN connectivity in terms of gateway requirements, in most cases SIP is quite a bit cheaper. SIP is also a more feasible service in that it can be a gateway to many more services, other than just voice, providing a much faster return on investment than with a traditional trunk.
In summary, any business who utilizes VoIP or has a roll-out under way, needs to take a serious look at using SIP trunks to maximize the benefits of their VoIP investment.
