Understanding business phone bills is a ton of work for the average accounts payable person. Business phone bills are far more complex than say any residential bill. Most carriers make them impossible to even read. It is a good idea to have your bills viewed by a professional telecom consultant or even someone in the interconnect business.
My experience in doing thousands of audits is that most telephone companies don’t pride themselves on accuracy. The other side of that is the LEC (Local Exchange Carrier) allows third party billing to occur. You or your company did not approve these charges and then suddenly they will appear on your phone bill.
So, when doing an audit of your phone bill, the first thing to look for is accuracy in charges. If you are being charged for something you did not order, call your phone carrier and dispute the charges immediately. The longer you wait, the harder it is to dispute the charges.
On the third-party billing aspect of charges, the charges will actually be outlined on the front page. It will name the billing clearinghouse i.e. ILD, OAN, The Billing Resource…etc. Then on the detail page it will give you the phone number and the name of the company that actually billed you. You will have to call the company and let them know you did not authorize these charges and demand a full refund. Once you jump through a few hoops, they will eventually refund your charges and the credit will show up on your bill in 1-2 billing cycles. The best thing to do is outsource and audit company to come in and do a full review of your services, most of these companies operate for free at least up front. The audit companies will generally state that unless they can save you money they will not charge you.
Keep an eye on your phone bill and stop being charged erroneously for services you don’t have! This has been another lesson in telecommunications form Stan Durst.
