If you have ever made a large number of long distance telephone calls, you are undoubtedly familiar with the high costs such calling can pose. VOIP phone systems, short for voice over Internet protocol have remedied this situation and made it possible for more people to connect from all over the world at very reasonable costs.
VOIP phone systems are widely used in business of their robust features and capabilities and because they allow simultaneous calling on multiple lines. They have, however, become more popular among residential Internet subscribers because of their cost-saving properties. Imagine being able to call your cousin in Canada or nephew in London all while sitting at home in New York. When you use a VOIP phone system via your Internet provider, you will be able to do just that all without having to worry about the high initial cost of connecting the call and how much more you will have to pay for the call itself. Now you can talk for a fraction of the cost while enjoying the benefits of such a system.
There are three methods of connecting a VOIP phone system to an Internet provider. The first is to use a standard telephone through your PSTN line and adapt it to the service, the second is to use a dedicated VOIP phone, and the third is to use a soft phone.
If you choose to use your standard telephone, you’ll need an adaptor that will connect it to a VOIP provider. This will connect your phone between an IP network and an existing telephone jack and will provide service. This service will be nearly indistinguishable from the traditional service you have used and will extend to all phone connected to all other telephone jacks in your place of residence. This type of service is fixed to one location and is generally offered by broadband Internet providers such as telephone and cable companies.
Dedicated VOIP phones offer calling capabilities without the use of a computer and may be a great choice for those who do not own one. They These phones do, however, connect directly to the IP network using connections such as wi-fi and Ethernet. In order to connect to the traditional phone line, otherwise known as a PSTN, service from a VOIP provider is required. That is why many subscribers choose to use this type of phone in conjunction with a paid service plan. Even if you do own a computer, you might consider this type of phone if you do not wish for your phone services to be connected directly to your computer.
A soft phone is also known as a Internet or digital phone and is a software application that, once installed on a computer, allows VOIP calling without the use of dedicated hardware such as an actual telephone. This is one of the most popular means of VOIP calling for residential use, although many subscribers are now turning to hardware for a more traditional feel.
No matter which means you choose, you will be presented with several options pertaining directly to your service. Take into consideration when choosing your features how much calling you actually do and whether or not you wish to use your traditional phone lines, purchase a VOIP phone or simply use the software, a microphone and headphones for talking to others. If you like to remain mobile while talking, using a standard phone just may be the answer. If you wish to save money, the VOIP or soft phone may work for you.
